“25th of April started with some heavy thunderstorms moving across the area making the challenge of finding clean water and fish a lot harder than expected. Friends had come from out of state, Jim Bly from Heber Springs, Arkansas, as well as Rob Binkley and Chuck Carter from Kennesaw, Georgia. After a great meal at Drago’s Thursday night, Capt. Dude suggested we try a little later trip that would put us in the right place when the tide would be perfect to get on the trout. We left Dudenhefer’s Bayou camp at 10:30am and were greeted by 20 to 30 knot winds which was going to put extra pressure
On finding the fish. While riding across the shallow bays and twisting bayous, I reflected on past trips of hunting and fishing with this group of guys and how things have changed in the twenty something years we’ve tried to keep this tradition going. Limits of fish and game have grown more restrictive and our time to get our schedules to work for a trip has become extremely tight. The Capt. slowing the Honda outboard down brought me back to the present as I tried to assist in getting everyone in the water ASAP. Rob connected first and was quickly followed by Chuck; call him “big daddy”, catching nice trout on artificial Salt water Assassin tails with 3/8oz heads. Things didn’t happen quick enough so Capt. Dude fired it up and zoomed a little closer to the edge of Breton Sound in hopes off finding clear water and more fish. As soon as Capt. Dude told Jim where to cast he was hooked up on a 20”+red taking quite a bit more drag than most fish of the Little Red River where he comes from. After photos and congrats we proceeded to have a most relaxing afternoon that gave us more specks than we needed to eat and catch up on old times.
The 26th started out with a bit of a chill in the air as the breeze had switched to northwest and the humidity was gone. The final member of the group, Mahlon “Boo” Oustalet met us at the dock as the sky started to break day in the East. With additional crew and extra provisions we left anticipating a great day of relaxation. Difficult for these professional types to slow down and enjoy our Bayou pass a good time mentality but I believe Capt. Dude was more than convincing when he anchored us in a spot that everyone on board caught trout and reds, some more than others. When the wind allowed us to run out a little further later in the morning we were able to get on some more awesome trout that were partial to artificial over bait. The wind started to kick the waves up again so we decided to head back via the protected water of Bayou Terre aux Bouef. Before Capt. Dude let me fire up the electric knife he took a couple of group shots of friends and fish.
With another great trip completed and bags of filets my friends went home to their families Sunday morning. Before any of them got too far we were back on the phone planning the next adventure before Capt. Dude and the Bayou Camp are booking up. Warren not only knows how to fish; he knows how to make people enjoy the entire experience. Without a doubt, the finest time spent on the water with great friends and excellent captain, boat, and equipment. We will be back “reeling” soon!
Thanx JA Cates”
